modeling when she was 3 years old. Her mother was a model and actress. She was acting in a TV commercial and they needed a child in the commercial so Roxanne was hired.
Interviewer: What are your hobbies?
Roxanne Gould: I like to read, to hike, to swim, dance and decorate my home.
I: So what was the first thing you learned as a model?
Roxanne Gould: The first thing I learned as a model was that you are an actor without speaking. The last thing I’ve learned as a model is the less you act and the more you are yourself, the better the picture will be. That’s because the styles and public image of women has changed a lot over the years.
I: Have any of your notions of the industry changed since you’ve started out?
Roxanne Gould: See the answer above, plus, on a larger scale the industry is reflecting diversity in women, which is wonderful. When I started modeling, all models were tall and thin. Now, more and more diverse body types, different ages and gender types are being recognized. Thanks to this, I’m still working!
I: Do you find it easy to keep a work-life balance?
Roxanne Gould: When I was raising my two kids there was a lot of juggling, organizing and preparing to do in order to leave my home to go on a modeling assignment. Now that my kids are grown, it’s a lot easier to travel. Over time, you learn how to balance everything more in your life.
I: Have you got used to the fact that you don’t really know what you’re going to be doing in the next three days?
Roxanne Gould: Oh yes! That’s the name of the game. My family and friends know that that is how it is with me. They find it exciting!
I: Who have been your icons?
Roxanne Gould: Audrey Hepburn has always been my icon. She matured into such an exquisite, natural and radiant beauty that it inspires me to hopefully be able to do the same.
I: Do you collect all the magazines you’re in?
I: Yes, I try to collect my work. I still have magazines from the 1980’s. I would love to see that first TV commercial I was in!
R: When traveling what are the five items you must bring?
I: The five items I always bring with me when traveling are lip balm, lotion, iPhone, charger and my wallet.
R: What’s something you haven’t achieved but hope to?
I: What I am working on achieving is finishing writing my books. I’m not a professional writer so it’s a challenge for me.
R: What’s your favorite / most memorable direction a photographer has ever given to you?
I: My favorite direction a photographer gave me was when he told me “Relax”!
R: What advice would you pass along to those starting out in the modeling business?
I: Be kind, have fun and remember that most ‘over night successes’ take years so keep following your dream!
