Older Models & Style Icons: Trends Beyond Youth

From the runways to cover pages to red carpets, men and women of all ages have become known this year for their style. But is this so-called “trend” here to stay? For models of every age group, both established stars and new talents are attracting attention through striking styling and personality.

As with every September issue of Vogue, the release of this year’s edition has once again sparked social media debates. Jennifer Lawrence appeared on four different covers to celebrate the publication’s 125th anniversary. Even if a model had appeared on all the covers, part of the internet probably still would not have been satisfied.

Celine Dion belongs to a growing group of models and style icons over 40 who gained their own platforms in 2017. While youth remains a strong asset for model agencies, older, experienced models prove that style and charisma are timeless. Dion, supported by stylist Law Roach, showcased avant-garde designs on the red carpet and in videos for Vogue during Paris Couture Week. Jane Fonda, Lauren Hutton, and Helen Mirren demonstrated that models beyond their 70s can be just as powerful as their younger counterparts.

The fashion world began to showcase models of all ages. Designers such as Demna Gvasalia, Rachel Comey, and Shayne Oliver deliberately work with models far beyond their twenties. Model agencies increasingly recognize that diverse modeling—across age, ethnicity, and body type—is both artistically and commercially valuable. According to The Fashion Spot, a total of 21 models over 50 walked in women’s shows in New York, London, Paris, and Milan during the Fall 2017 season—a steadily growing number.

This new interest in older models is not just a trend but also reflects the desire to celebrate long-term security and experience. Many established models and fashion icons show that the ability to appear confident and maintain a unique style does not end at 25. While younger models and influencers continue to capture social media attention, these veterans remind us that good modeling, a smart model agency, and consistent commitment to one’s style are universal values.

Whether this is a lasting change or merely a PR stunt remains to be seen. One thing is clear: the fashion industry is beginning to broaden its perspective, and models of every generation can find a stage to showcase style, personality, and timeless elegance.
